Like a Drug

A Poem

Gentle hands, like fists of iron

Hold me in my place

Captive to my one desire

Blinding beauty wrapped in scarlet lace

A twisted world of lust and lies

Where wonders never cease

Memories burned forever in my mind

Of promises I never meant to keep

Her love is like a drug inside my veins

The way she pierces just before she numbs away the pain

Till there’s nothing left to win or lose. No honor to defend

Cause every time I break away, I come right back again

Oh you intoxicate me, babe

Like a drug inside my veins

I still remember long night drives

When we were just nineteen

You held my heart inside those yellow lines

Back when cash was tight, and love was king

Every now and then you come around

Dolled up like a dream

It always seems to be when I’m feeling down

I see that face, then I can hardly breathe

Your love is like a drug inside my veins

The way you pierce me just before you numb away the pain

Till there’s nothing left to win or lose. No honor to defend

Cause every time I break away, I come right back again

Oh you intoxicate me, babe

Like a drug inside my veins
