I have noticed this trend too, especially on medium. There's an odd sort of moralizing of negativity...cynicism, hysteria, and being offended are not mere emotional states. They are treated as virtues.

I like to pose a simple question to people who see the world as a screwed up place: compared to what?

Is there a time in history you think we should go back to? If the answer is no, then it's fair to say that we are making progress. If the answer is yes then the ideology exposes itself for the reactionary, anti-progressive, and anti-humanist dogma that it is. Because, on practically every metric from life expectancy, to poverty, to happniess itself, humanity has progressed by leaps and bounds over the past several hundred years in ways that can and have literally been plotted on graphs (Enlightenment Now, Steven Pinker).

It's odd that this point is so hard for people to grasp. Pinker makes a joke that I love. He says intellectuals hate progress. Intellectuals who call themselves "progressive"....really hate progress.
